Annette Funicello had just turned 13 when Walt Disney, the studio's head of production, saw her dancing in the Fullerton California amateur Swan Lake. Funicello was the main character in Beach Party the first of five extremely popular film about beach parties, typically co-starring Frankie Avalon although produced by AIP The scripts for every one of these films were personally reviewed and approved by Walt Disney in order to safeguard Annette's clean, squeaky-clean appearance.
