O'Grady lived in Wheaton, Illinois, and attended the Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the child of Jan O'Grady (a financial planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. Each year, she was awarded Emmy Award nods for Outstanding Actress for the Drama Series.
