O'Neil tried out for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still at high school. The singer made it through to the top 100 rounds when judges applauded her vocal ability. O'Neil received high praise by the judges. However, she experienced substantial losses during the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell to the lowest 3 and 2 spots in both cases. Judges were shocked at this, and instructed the crowd to choose contestants similar to Melissa with the best singing abilities. O'Neil's performances were consistently good, that he didn't fall in the bottom 3. O'Neil and Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and became the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and the youngest winner in time of the show. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol right away.
